That being said, I highly respect the work that has been put in by the developers of the above-listed software.

Similarly, if you’re an engineering student with CAD on your curriculum, I’d recommend that you use the software that your college prescribes (AutoCAD, SolidEdge, Catia), which generally tends to run on Windows only.Īnd for advanced professionals, these tools are simply not up to the mark when we’re talking about industry standards.įor those of you thinking about running AutoCAD in WINE, although some older versions of AutoCAD can be installed on WINE, they simply do not perform, with glitches and crashes ruining the experience. What you do with this information is up to you.Īlthough gaming on Linux has picked up, I always tell my hardcore gaming friends to stick to Windows.

  • Then there’s LeoCAD, which is a CAD program where you use LEGO blocks to build stuff.

  • Siemens NX is an industrial-grade CAD solution available on Windows, Mac OS and Linux, but it’s ridiculously expensive, so we’ve omitted it from this list.
  • SolveSpace is another open-source project worth mentioning.
  • With a huge growth in cloud computing technologies, cloud CAD solutions like OnShape have been getting more popular each day.

That kind of things can provide a big performance boost. That would allow, for example, to keep one part with a lot of calculations in a file, and not have that calculation done in the file it is linked in. One thing the assembly module proposes to do, is to allow to link a part from another file in a model. Given the size of your model above, working with the Drawing module or the Drawing dimensioning module should still be very fast.

Maybe some pieces you design don't need their parametric history anymore, etc.īut there might also be some problem with your install or your system. So basically you must be aware of that, and manage. That's why in FreeCAD most heavyweight stuff is done in C++. To complicate the matter further, python programs can sometimes be drastically slower than C++ programs. The more you put "intelligence", in other words, you force some calculation to be done under certain conditions, the more you slow things down. This is a tradeoff present in all parametric apps (at least those I tried). What takes time, are as you say the calculations. When you perform "basic" stuff, you can easily manage a huge quantity of data, being Parts or Meshes. There are probably several different issues in what you are describing Renato.įreeCAD itself is not particularily "slow".

All this, i repeat, only if i have designs whit different objects, as that i put down. The programm thinks too much for doing its work.

In "drawing dimensioning" it is impossile to put the dimensions. Even when i am working with "drawing" i have found different problems of velocity in creating the page and in the changing of the parameters (as the scale of the design).

The objects are loaded in a right velocity, but the problems are when i have to modify them, in particular when i am in "assembly 2" and i have to do differents constraints (the program thinks a lot for any constraint and it goes in default). Something that FreeCAD does not currently do, and OCE does on a very limited basis.Īs i have said i have realised some projects, and the only difficulties are been the slow velocity that i think to have found with complex objects. The one thing that would speed this up would be for FreeCAD and OCE to take 100% advantage of multiple processors. So the more complex the model, the longer it takes to reconstruct as it goes through all the saved steps in creating the model. When FreeCAD loads a file, I'm pretty sure it reconstructs the model as it is being loaded. The Nvidia Quadro line will do quite well with a 3D CAD program. At the same time a top of the line video card designed for 3D CAD will do poorly with 3D games. A top of the line 3D gaming video card will not do so well displaying 3D from a CAD program. When you say "slow velocity" are you talking about the speed it loads a file, (large files can be slow to load), or are you talking about the frame rate of the display? Not having a windows machine that would be capable of running solidworks, even if I had a pirated copy, I have no idea how fast it loads, but as for display, CAD programs use a video card quite differently than a 3D game uses them.
